Claims and the record
  • In a September 2026 Meeting, Judge Daniel Wong proposed a tax rate decrease, which passed 3-1. After Wong’s proposal to decrease the tax rate, Commissioner McCoy walked out of the meeting and did not vote on the tax decrease.
  • McCoy and fellow Democrat Grady Prestage refused to attend Commissioners Court Meetings for almost 6 months, refusing to participate in conducting county business, with Wong serving as County Judge. They both returned for the budget and tax rate approval meeting, the meeting McCoy walk out of.
  • In the 2021 meeting to adopt a redistricting map, the members of Commissioners Court were about to vote to adopt then Democrat Commissioner Pct. 4 Ken DeMerchant’s map, when Bridgette Smith-Lawson, Democrat County Attorney, improperly interrupted the Court’s proceedings and gave the Court bogus advice. She said the previous motion, which substituted DeMerchant’s map for a map from the County Judge was improper and the Court could not proceed with the vote of approval. She created confusion and chaos. (A motion to substitute one redistricting map for another is proper). This allowed McCoy, then Judge K.P. George’s Chief of Staff, to present a map at the last minute without review or input by other Court members or the public or review by redistricting attorneys, which the County Judge said was based on race, and which passed 3-2 along partisan lines, that 1.) resulted in McCoy defeating the incumbent Anglo Democrat, DeMerchant, in the 2022 Democrat Primary Election, 2.) created 3 Democrat Commissioner Precincts in a 50-50 county, and 3.) Redistricted 25-year Republican Commissioner Pct. 3 Andy Meyers and his dying wife out of their home of 47 years. State Representative Matt Morgan sent notice to the county that he had the map reviewed and the conclusion was the map did not meet all relevant statutes and was illegal. Several redistricting experts confirmed this. In 2025, after Judge George switched parties, the now Republican majority redistricted the county to correct the illegal map, which passed 3-2 again along partisan lines. The new Map went into effect for the 2026 Election. Prestage and McCoy refused to vote to redistrict Meyers back into his home, in a stand-alone vote, several months prior to the 2025 Redistricting Vote.
